Mikumi is southern Tanzania's most accessible park, reached in around five hours by road from Dar es Salaam. Its Mkata floodplain is often compared to the Serengeti, with open grasslands grazed by elephant, buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and giraffe, watched over by lion and the occasional leopard. Mikumi's accessibility makes it ideal for shorter safaris and for travellers wanting a genuine bush experience without flying. It borders the much larger Nyerere ecosystem to the south.
