Tanzania Northern Circuit: The Complete 4-Park Safari Guide with Sample Itineraries

3 min read Jun 25, 2026

Tanzania's Northern Circuit covers four of the most iconic national parks in Africa — Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro — within a connected loop that most visitors complete in 5–10 days. It is the most-visited safari circuit in East Africa, the home of the Great Migration, the stronghold of Africa's largest remaining elephant populations, and the location of the world's most complete Big Five viewing. This guide covers every park on the Northern Circuit in depth: what each delivers, how to connect them, and the sample itineraries that work for different durations.

The Four Northern Circuit Parks

Tarangire National Park

Tanzania's most underrated park and the best introduction to the Northern Circuit. Tarangire hosts the highest elephant concentration in Tanzania during the dry season (June–October) — herds of 50–200 elephants congregate along the Tarangire River as surrounding water sources dry up. The landscape of giant ancient baobab trees against open savannah is unlike any other Tanzania park. Lions, leopard, zebra, wildebeest, and excellent bird life (including the unusual ground hornbill) make Tarangire a full destination in its own right. The park also has reliable wild dog sightings during the denning season, unusual for northern Tanzania. Best time: June–October (dry season concentration).

Lake Manyara National Park

A compact park (323 km²) pressed between the Rift Valley escarpment and an alkaline lake. Famous for two phenomena found almost nowhere else in Africa: tree-climbing lions (prides regularly rest in fig and mahogany branches — the reason is debated, possibly to escape flies, possibly for cooling air) and flamingo aggregations on Lake Manyara (up to 20,000 individuals, turning the lake pink). The park's groundwater forest near the gate holds the densest elephant population per square kilometre in Tanzania. Best time: Year-round; November–March for flamingos; dry season for tree-lions visibility.

Serengeti National Park

14,763 km² — Tanzania's largest and most famous national park, home to the Great Migration. The Serengeti holds Africa's highest predator density: 3,000+ lion, 1,000+ leopard, 7,700+ cheetah. Wildlife viewing is exceptional year-round in the central Seronera area; the Migration adds calving drama (January–March) or river crossings (July–October) depending on season. The open short-grass plains of the south are unlike anything in East Africa — the sense of infinite space and the density of wildlife are genuinely different from any other Africa destination. Best time: Year-round; January–March for calving; July–October for crossings.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area and Crater

The 8,292 km² Conservation Area contains the iconic crater plus the Olduvai Gorge (key early hominid fossil site) and the Ndutu plains (calving grounds). The 260 km² crater itself is Africa's most reliable Big Five destination — the enclosed caldera walls mean resident animals (including 30+ black rhinos, 60–70 lions, 400+ hyenas, and large elephant bulls) are always present. See the separate Ngorongoro Crater guide for full vehicle and descent logistics.

Sample Northern Circuit Itineraries

  • Day 2: Tarangire morning → Lake Manyara afternoon
  • Day 3: Ngorongoro highlands crossing → Serengeti entry
  • Day 4: Full day Serengeti
  • Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater full descent → Arusha

7 Days — The Complete Circuit

  • Days 1–2: Tarangire (full day + morning)

  • Day 3: Cross to Serengeti (afternoon game drive)
  • Days 4–5: Two full Serengeti days (different zones)
  • Day 6: Ngorongoro Crater full day
  • Day 7: Return Arusha

10 Days — Maximum Northern Circuit

  • Days 1–2: Tarangire
  • Day 3: Lake Manyara
  • Days 4–7: Four full Serengeti days (central Seronera, western corridor, northern Lamai)
  • Day 8: Ngorongoro Crater
  • Day 9: Ndutu/southern Serengeti (January–March: calving grounds)
  • Day 10: Return Arusha

Connection Logistics

All four parks connect by road: Arusha → Tarangire (90 min) → Lake Manyara (30 min from Tarangire direction) → Ngorongoro highlands → Serengeti (5.5 hrs from Arusha). Most safari vehicles drive these connections — charter flights between Arusha and Serengeti (45 min) are available for those wanting to maximise time on the ground rather than in transit. The drive from Arusha to the Serengeti is long but the road through the Ngorongoro highlands is genuinely beautiful.
