The Lemosho Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the remote western face — through pristine rainforest where elephant and buffalo are sometimes encountered — before joining the Machame Route above Lava Tower for the final summit push. Eight days of gradual ascent gives your body the best acclimatisation profile available on the mountain.

This is the route recommended by most altitude medicine specialists and preferred by serious trekkers who have already climbed Kilimanjaro once and want to improve on a previous attempt. The combination of western approach (fewer crowds in the first three days), long acclimatisation, and the dramatic Shira Plateau creates a more immersive mountain experience than any other route.

Lemosho summit success rates on 8-day itineraries consistently exceed 90% when run by experienced operators with proper guide ratios. Visit Kili's Lemosho climbs maintain a 1:3 guide-to-trekker ratio and carry emergency oxygen on all ascents.

Common Questions

Frequently asked

What is the success rate on the Lemosho Route?

On an 8-day Lemosho itinerary with an experienced operator maintaining proper guide ratios and carrying emergency oxygen, summit success rates consistently exceed 90%. The key variable is not the route — it's the number of days and the quality of your guiding team. Visit Kili's Lemosho success rate across all 2025 climbs was 93%. Individual fitness, acclimatisation response, and weather are always factors no operator can fully control.
