The Marangu Route is Kilimanjaro's original ascent path and the only route with permanent dormitory huts along the way — meaning you sleep in a bed rather than a tent every night. This makes it popular with trekkers who prefer comfort over camping and want the most budget-accessible Kilimanjaro option.

The honest trade-off: Marangu's 5-day profile has the shortest acclimatisation window of any route we offer, and summit success rates reflect this — approximately 65% on the standard 5-day versus 85%+ on the 7-day Machame. The route is also the only one that ascends and descends the same path, meaning you see the same terrain twice rather than a traverse.

If budget is the primary consideration, or if you specifically prefer sleeping in huts, Marangu is the answer. If summit success probability matters most, choose the Machame or Lemosho.

Common Questions

Frequently asked

Why does the Marangu Route have a lower success rate?

The Marangu Route's 65% success rate (vs 85%+ on Machame) comes down to acclimatisation time. The 5-day itinerary gives your body fewer days above 3,500m — the critical altitude zone where red blood cell production increases. The same-path ascent/descent also limits the 'climb high, sleep low' profile that makes Machame so effective. A 6-day Marangu option (adding an acclimatisation day at Horombo) pushes success rates toward 75% — ask us about this upgrade when booking.
