The Machame Route — nicknamed the Whiskey Route — is Kilimanjaro's most popular and dramatic path to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Over 7 days you ascend through five climate zones: equatorial rainforest, open heath, alpine moorland, volcanic desert, and arctic summit. The extra acclimatisation day compared to the 6-day version pushes summit success rates above 85%.

Day three's 'climb high, sleep low' acclimatisation push to Lava Tower (4,630m) is the physiological key to this route's high success rate — your body adapts to altitude while you descend to sleep lower. The Barranco Wall on day four is Kilimanjaro's most dramatic moment: a hands-and-feet rock scramble with exposure but no technical skill required, rewarding you with panoramic views of the Southern Ice Fields.

All Visit Kili Machame climbs include a private team of guides, a personal porter, cook, and camp crew. Every trekker has a dedicated porter — no shared porter arrangements that compromise safety margins.

Common Questions

Frequently asked

How difficult is the 7-day Machame Route?

Machame is rated challenging — not because of technical difficulty (no ropes or climbing experience needed) but because of the daily hours, sustained altitude above 3,800m, and the summit night at -10 to -20°C. The 7-day version is significantly more manageable than the 6-day: the extra acclimatisation day at Lava Tower is the physiological difference between a 65% and 85% summit rate. Anyone with good cardiovascular fitness and proper preparation can summit. See our Trek Guides for a 12-week training plan.

What is included in the Kilimanjaro park fee?

Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) fees include the conservation levy, camping fees for all nights, the mandatory rescue fund contribution, and your summit certificate. These are fixed government fees — all operators pay the same amount. They currently total approximately $980 per person for a 7-day climb and are included in our package price.
