Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar: The Classic Tanzania 2-Week Itinerary

2 min read Jun 25, 2026

This Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar itinerary pairs the roof of Africa with Indian-Ocean beaches. Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar is Tanzania's most iconic two-destination combination — the roof of Africa followed by white-sand beaches and warm Indian Ocean water. It works brilliantly because they're logistical opposites: a hard, cold, high-altitude physical challenge bookended by complete rest and warmth. The combination is also geographically efficient — both destinations fly out of Kilimanjaro International Airport and Zanzibar is a 25-minute flight from Dar es Salaam or 1 hour from Arusha. This is the sequencing and booking guide for doing it right.

Why Kilimanjaro Then Zanzibar Works

The physical logic: Kilimanjaro depletes you. 7–9 days at altitude, a summit night, and a long descent leave your legs sore, your body dehydrated, and your immune system mildly suppressed. What your body wants after that is warmth, rest, good food, and passive recovery. Zanzibar delivers all four. The beach days after a Kilimanjaro summit are among the most satisfying holiday days most people experience — you've earned them in a way that a resort arrival on day one never matches.

Getting from Kilimanjaro to Zanzibar

The most common routing: Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) → Dar es Salaam (DAR) → Zanzibar (ZNZ). Domestic flights on Precision Air, Air Tanzania, or Auric Air connect JRO to DAR (45 min, multiple daily) and DAR to ZNZ (20 min). Total transfer time: 3–4 hours including airport waits. Alternatively, fly JRO → Zanzibar via Arusha on Coastal Aviation or Auric Air (1–1.5 hours). Book domestic flights separately from your international ticket — they're more flexible and significantly cheaper booked locally.

Sample 2-Week Kilimanjaro + Zanzibar Itinerary

Days 1–7: Machame Route Kilimanjaro

Seven days from Machame Gate to Uhuru Peak and back. The climb itself.

Day 8: Descent and Rest in Moshi

Critical rest day. Return to Moshi hotel, shower, eat, sleep. Do not fly today regardless of what your schedule says — your body needs this day.

Day 9: Moshi → Kilimanjaro Airport → Zanzibar

Morning transfer to JRO (45 min from Moshi). Domestic flight to Zanzibar via Dar es Salaam or Arusha. Afternoon arrival at your Zanzibar beach hotel. First swim optional — the Indian Ocean after Kilimanjaro is reliably described as one of the great sensory experiences of the trip.

Days 10–13: Zanzibar

4 days on Zanzibar covering: Stone Town half-day (historical sites, Forodhani night market), spice tour morning, beach days at your chosen resort area, and optional snorkelling at Mnemba Atoll or Prison Island day trip (Aldabra giant tortoises). Your Kilimanjaro legs will be recovered by day 11 — enough for a Stone Town walking tour but not enough for anything ambitious.

Day 14: Zanzibar → Departure

Fly ZNZ → DAR → international connection, or ZNZ → Nairobi for long-haul connection.

Which Zanzibar Beach Area to Choose

For post-Kilimanjaro recovery (calm, swimmable, peaceful): Nungwi or Kendwa (northwest) — swimmable at all tides, developed beach bar scene, sunset-facing. For couples/honeymoon: Matemwe (east) or Kiwengwa — quieter, boutique properties, coral reef snorkelling. For budget: Paje (east) — kite-surfing capital, good-value guesthouses, vibrant backpacker scene but tidal (sandflat at low tide).

Cost Breakdown

  • 7-Day Machame Kilimanjaro: $2,395–2,900
  • Rest day Moshi: $60–100
  • Domestic flights (JRO–ZNZ return): $120–200
  • 4 nights Zanzibar (mid-range): $400–800
  • Zanzibar activities: $100–200
  • Tips (climb): $250–350
  • Total (excl. international flights): $3,400–4,500 per person

Booking Sequence

Book Kilimanjaro dates first (fills fastest). Book Zanzibar accommodation based on your descent date + 1 rest day. Book domestic flights last — domestic Tanzania flights are flexible and cheap to change. International routing: fly into JRO (Kilimanjaro Airport) and out of ZNZ (Zanzibar) — a one-way loop that avoids backtracking and is often no more expensive than a return to JRO.
