Nyerere National Park — formerly the Selous Game Reserve — is Africa's largest protected wildlife area at over 50,000 km². It sees a fraction of the visitors of the Serengeti, yet hosts enormous populations of elephant, hippo, crocodile, buffalo, and the endangered African wild dog. A 3-day safari here feels genuinely wild.

Unlike Northern Circuit parks, Nyerere offers boat safaris on the Rufiji River — drifting past pods of hippo and basking crocs while elephants wade the shallows. Game walks with armed rangers are also available, putting you on the ground in real African bush.

Based at a mid-range tented camp on the Rufiji River, you'll run two full-day game drives and one boat safari over three days, with a fly-in or road transfer option from Dar es Salaam.

Common Questions

Frequently asked

When is the best time to visit Nyerere National Park?

The dry season (June–October) is best for game viewing — animals congregate around the Rufiji River and wildlife density is highest. Avoid the long rains (March–May) when some roads become impassable. The short dry season (January–February) is also excellent and less crowded.
