The 3-day Mount Meru climb is the minimum itinerary for a genuine summit attempt — fast, intense, and deeply rewarding. Starting at Momella Gate in Arusha National Park (armed ranger mandatory), you ascend through buffalo country, montane forest, and open moorland to the dramatic crater saddle before the midnight summit push along the exposed crater rim to Socialist Peak (4,566m).

The 3-day version is suitable for physically fit, altitude-experienced trekkers. Those without prior altitude experience or who want to use Meru as Kilimanjaro preparation should consider the 4-day option, which adds a crucial acclimatisation day at Saddle Hut and significantly reduces altitude sickness risk on the summit push.

Common Questions

Frequently asked

3-day or 4-day Mount Meru — which should I choose?

The 4-day version adds an acclimatisation day at Saddle Hut (3,566m) with an optional rotation hike to Little Meru (3,820m). This extra day significantly reduces the altitude sickness risk on summit night and is strongly recommended for anyone without recent high-altitude experience. The 3-day version is appropriate for fit trekkers who have been above 3,500m within the last 6 months. If in doubt, choose 4 days — the extra day on Meru costs less than a failed summit attempt.
